Google has unveiled the results of its ‘2025 year in search’ — a list that reveals notable people and subjects that captured the interest of Nigerians throughout the year.
Google’s ‘year in search’ is an annual analysis that shows the top trending lists and also spotlights what the world searches to see, learn, and do.
The results, which were released on Thursday, highlight widespread interest in major international events, particularly the Israel-Iran War and the US elections.
Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator representing Kogi central, emerged as the most-searched Nigerian personality in 2025.
The death of former President Muhammadu Buhari also triggered significant public engagement online, as Nigerians revisited his two-term presidency.
Football fans similarly turned to Google to celebrate Peter Rufai, after the former Super Eagles goalkeeper passed away during the year.
Pope Francis’ passing led to heightened search traffic as users sought updates and reactions from around the world.
In music trends, the gospel hit ‘Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough)’ by Tkeyz featuring Steve Hills topped searches, followed by ‘Joy is Coming’ by Fido and Davido and Omah Lay’s track ‘With You’.
Nollywood commanded its share of attention, with director Kemi Adetiba ranking among the most-searched cultural figures. ‘To Kill a Monkey’, her widely discussed series, was listed as the most-searched local show.
Google’s year-end data also captured lighter cultural fascinations, including the Labubu toy craze, which spiked in searches nationwide.
