Zikora, a media production company, has launched a year-long culture campaign titled “Decolonizing Beauty”.
In a statement, its executives said the campaign aims to “educate the public” and “celebrate beauty” customs across Africa.
The company said the digital campaign would serve as a platform to challenge “narrow” perceptions of African beauty standards.
Zikora said it would also serve as a showcase for the multifaceted historic beauty traditions in Africa’s diverse cultures.
The campaign will employ a multi-platform strategy to engage a wide audience of English and French speakers globally.
Zikora announced several initiatives to work hand-in-hand with the campaign.
These initiatives will include various contests among African creatives and entrepreneurs that will run throughout the year.
These initiatives include: ‘Crowns of Coils: An Ode to African Hair’, ‘Roots on Reels: Showcasing African Beauty Through Film’ and ‘Motherland Beauty: A Poetic Exploration of Traditional African Beauty’.
Others include: ‘African Beauty in Focus: A Photojournalism Project’ and ‘Hairitage in Motion: A Live Celebration of African Hairstyles’.
Launched in 2023, Zikora positions itself as focused on producing, preserving, and promoting creative content and art that captures the nuanced stories of Africa and Africans.
This is done through film production, events, journalistic reportage, literary arts, photography, visual arts, and performance art.
