Femi Kuti, the ace musician, has made a passionate plea to youth to stay in Nigeria and work towards a better future.
Femi gave the advice at this year’s Felabration, an annual festival celebrating the life and legacy of Fela Anikulakpo Kuti, the late Afrobeat icon.
The event took place at the Afrika Shrine in Lagos between October 14 to 20.
While addressing the concertgoers, Femi emphasized the importance of Nigerian youth fighting for a better country.
The 62-year-old musician said his son Made lives in Nigeria despite being a British citizen. Femi also stated that his son “cannot be anywhere else other than Nigeria”.
“Somebody dey ask me say you no go japa? Japa to where? Let me tell you about Europe. What made Europe great? You think they ran away,” he said.
“They fought hundreds of civil wars. America had one of the most bitter civil wars in history. That is why till today, an American still carries gun. They don’t joke there.
“So until we understand that we all have to stay here, and must fight for a better country that we love. We did not build the shrine in Los Angeles or London, we built it in Africa.
“Now we are here hosting the biggest festival for 27 years. Get your senses together because this country depends on you.
“Made is a British citizen but where is he? He is in Nigeria. He cannot be anywhere else. Who born am? Na monkey born am? Wetin he wan go do for there?
“Yes, if dem call am for money, he goes to play, he come back for here. Who wan take over the shrine? Me sef I wan retire one day. So, he better be doing the right thing in his life and get himself together as he is doing.”
In the past years, thousands of Nigerians have relocated to countries like the US, United Kingdom, and Canada.
Some of the reasons for migration include better economic conditions, educational purposes, better healthcare, and career enhancement among others.
