Several years after the death of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, his influence is still felt across the world and his music remains evergreen and consequently, in demand.
Fela! The Concert, a broadway musical concert about the Afrobeat progenitor, was conceived to sate that yearn.
And it has been doing that for the past two days – in Lagos, Nigeria.
The first and second shows of the theatrical concert were packed to the rafters with an audience full of energy and verve.
Afrobeat enthusiasts, celebrities, and plain old fun lovers have been left feeling nostalgic with each performance.
The concert features the cast of the Tony award-winning broadway musical such as Sarh Nguajah who plays Fela, Iris Wilson, Rue Brown, Jason Herbert, Afi Bijou, Shawn Fisher.
Olutayo Bosede, a Nigerian actor and dancer, is also among the cast.
From energetic dance performances to flawless musical renditions and believable theatrical displays, Fela! The Concert brings back fond memories to those who were opportuned to see the legend perform live, and awe to those who never did. Daily, the band and performers re-enact the spirit of the Afrobeat maestro in a two-hour performance while engaging the excited audience.
But it’s not been all about Fela’s stage displays alone.
While many attendees often sport Fela-esque outfits, guests were also treated to Fela-inspired makeup by Zaron cosmetics.
The musical concert will come to a climax on Saturday at Eko Convention Centre, Lagos.
