According to NAN, Olayemi Akinwumi, the vice-chancellor (VC) of the institution, announced the development on Monday.

Akinwumi was at the media briefing to commence activities marking the fifth convocation ceremony of the institution at the female campus in Lokoja.

While speaking about security and its student population, the VC said that the varsity had engaged the services of qualified hunters to complement the conventional security agencies in securing the female campus.

The VC hinted that the management had written to the senate, Tertiary Education Fund (TETFund), and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on the need to construct perimeter fencing to secure the permanent site.

Akinwumi said efforts are being made for the varsity to commence health and medical programmes in December.

The VC said the university has appointed Mike Ogirima, former national president of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), as the provost of the college of health sciences in the institution.

He added that the management of the varsity had approached the Joint and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to facilitate the intake of the first set of medical students in December.

Akinwumi said the National Universities Commission (NUC) and JAMB had approved the increase of the admission quota from 1,500 to 4,000 students.

According to him, the university is working towards improving water supply, power, furniture, and a standard health services centre for improved service delivery.
