According to NAN, Iwa Okosun, brother of the late singer, spoke at the ‘Make a Widow Smile for Christmas’ programme organised by the Advocacy for Widows Empowerment Foundation (ADWEF) at Sunny’s church in Lagos.

Iwa revealed that the initiative is scheduled to commence in 2026. He emphasised the family’s commitment to preserving Okosun’s profound musical and ideological legacy for future generations.

“We are determined to prevent the hard-earned legacies of Sonny Okosun from going into oblivion,” Iwa stated.

He explained that the project is part of a broader effort to sustain all that Okosun left behind, including his church, where a memorial service is held annually on May 23, the anniversary of his passing in 2008.

The family also noted that Okosun’s children are actively involved in upholding their father’s musical heritage. However, they cited a significant obstacle currently slowing their progress: a lack of adequate financing.

Okosun, who died from health-related complications, is widely celebrated as a pioneer of African liberation music. He ingeniously blended Afrobeat, reggae, and funk to create the distinctive ‘Ozzidi’ sound, through which he delivered powerful messages against apartheid and injustice. His career was defined by an unwavering promotion of social justice, pan-Africanism, and freedom. In his later years, he transitioned to gospel music and founded his own church.
