Failed wildcard task, less drama… five talking points from BBNaija’s first week

The sixth edition of the Big Brother Nigeria (BBNaija) reality TV show has entered its second week as the race for the N90 million grand prize hots up.

The show, which started on July 24, has so far continued to dominate discussions on social media platforms.

TheCable Lifestyle examines five major talking points from the first week of the show.

Peace named first head of house (HoH)

Peace started her foray into the house on an impressive note after she emerged the first HoH.

The 26-year-old entrepreneur had clinched the much-coveted position after she defeated the 21 other housemates in a keenly contested dice game.

She had thereafter picked Yousef as her deputy.

The development means both last year and this year’s editions of the show had a female housemate as first HoH.

During the show’s fifth season, dubbed ‘Lockdown’ edition, Nengi had emerged the first HoH. 

Less drama

A major feature of the BBNaija show every year is the usual heated drama that happens among housemates.

But so far on the ‘Shine Ya Eye’ edition, the atmosphere has generally been calm except for few occasions when the housemates had a go at each other.

Maria and Angel had sparked the first uproar on the show when they exchange words during a guessing game.

Pere and Nini also yelled at each other after completing a task with the latter accusing the former of raising his voice at her while she was trying to correct him.

Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the host, had reflected on this during the first eviction show held on Sunday night.

Ebuka noted that the housemates are yet to demonstrate much energy during the first week of the show, contrary to their promise while making their way into the house.

“I yawned a few times, I’m not gonna lie. You guys are not really bringing it. You guys were shouting ‘vibes, vibes, vibes’ on the stage on your way to the house. I’m not seeing that vibe, honestly,” he had said.

Buttressing his point, he cited the attitudes of some of the housemates during their first Saturday night party.

“At the party yesterday (Saturday), DJ Big N was amazing. Half of you were dancing in the mirror and looking at yourself, the other half were taking selfies, the others were at the bar hanging out. I was like, where’s the energy? What’s going on with you guys?” he added.

Time will tell if the housemates will live up to the expectations of fans in terms of drama in the coming weeks.

Failed wildcard task

The introduction of wildcards was a major twist to this year’s edition of the show.

The wildcards are two fake housemates among the 22 ushered into the reality show. They are to be identified by their colleagues.

BBNaija housemates for each season should normally be 20 but 22 were announced to the surprise of the viewers.

Biggie, the instructive voice behind the show, thereafter tasked the housemates to identify the wildcards for eviction.

Although the actual wildcards are Pere and Maria, majority of the housemates selected Jaypaul and Liqurose.

Due to their inability to identify the wildcards, Biggie had announced that they would be eligible to contest with their colleagues for the show’s N90m grand prize with a “nomination edge.”

No housemate was also evicted during the first week as expected due to their failure to predict the wildcards.

First cultural drama

Another highlight of the show’s first week was the cultural drama staged by the housemates.

The drama, directed by Sammie, addressed the country’s diversity and the need for unity despite the challenges facing it.

Housemates dazzled in different cultural attires representing various ethnic groups and their displays earned them commendation from Biggie.

Less romantic relationships

So far on the show, talks of romantic relationships among the housemates have been minimal.

During the first week, the spotlight beamed on Sammie and Angel over the seeming bond between them.

The pair have been seen together on the show several times and even at the Saturday night party. Can their seemingly fledging relationship stand the test of time?

Will more housemates engage in romantic relationships in the coming weeks? Time will tell.
