Bolaji Alonge, Nigerian photographer and journalist, would be staging an outdoor photo exhibition at ‘Felabration’, a music festival celebrating Fela Kuti, late Nigerian Afrobeats singer.
Felabration is a week-long event that holds in memory of the much-celebrated Afrobeats legend and features activities of various sorts including street parades, symposia on social and topical issues, debates, and photo exhibitions.
Alonge, in a press statement released on Tuesday, said his exhibition would hold at the Freedom Park during ‘Felabration’ 2019.
“This exhibition is organized with the support of Chocolate City Music, in cooperation with Freedom Park and Felabration 2019. Photos and posters will be on sale in limited editions at both Freedom Park and the New Afrika Shrine,” the statement read.
“The New Afrika Shrine, Femi’s concert venue, is an iconic space in contemporary Nigeria, built on the foundations of Fela’s legendary Africa Shrine that acquired countercultural stature since the early 1970s.
“Felabration is held during the week of Fela’s birthday. The event features musical performances by top music acts from Nigeria and guest appearances by internationally acclaimed musicians and personalities.
“The one-week-long event is held annually at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja and at Freedom Park, Lagos Island. It attracts visitors from all over the world and has thus been considered as an official tourist destination by the Lagos State Government.”
In June 2019, Alonge presented an exclusive selection of artworks expressive of the historical, cultural and aesthetic norms of the commercial city of Lagos, to Quintessence, an art gallery situated in Ikoyi.
In May 2017, he also organized his ‘Eyes of a Lagos Boy’ photo exhibition at Freedom Park in Lagos. ‘Urban Culture – Historical Continuity’, his second solo exhibition, was held at One Draw Gallery, Ikoyi, Lagos in November 2018.
