The legislators participated in the “Hope in Heels” event sponsored by Halton Women’s Place, a shelter in Ontario, to show their commitment to ending violence against women.

Omar Alghabra, Canadian transport minister, took to his Twitter page to share a video of lawmakers walking around a conference table in high heels, clapping and shaking their hips in a cringey conga line.

Alghabra said that violence against women is still prevalent in society and events like “Hope in High Heels” are essential to encourage men and boys to become part of the solution.

He added that they wore pink heels to show support for “this important cause”.

“Violence against women is still prevalent in our society,” he wrote.

“Hope in High Heels’ is an event that spreads awareness about violence against women while encouraging men and boys to be part of the solution.

“We wore their signature pink heels in support of this important cause.”

On her part, Liberal MP Karina Gould, who also shared pictures of her male peers donning the hot pink heels, wrote: “Educating men and boys is part of the solution, and it is all of our responsibilities to end gender based violence.”

Pink is a stereotypical colour representing females.

Since the video went viral on social media, users have continued to register their different opinions, with some mocking the Canadian male parliament members for parading around in hot pink heels.
