There was confusion on social media after the Grammy Awards “mistakenly” announced ‘Barbie World’, the hit song by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice as the winner of the ‘Best Rap Song’ category.
The award ceremony kicked off in the early hours of Monday and was held at the Peacock Theater.
‘Barbie World’ was nominated in the ‘Best Rap Song’ category alongside Doja Cat’s ‘Attention’; ‘Just Wanna Rock’ by Lil Uzi Vert; ‘Rich Flex’ by Drake and 21 Savage; and ‘Scientists & Engineers’ by Killer Mike featuring Andre 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane.
In a post via X, the music award handler mistakenly posted ‘Barbie World’ as the winner of the category before quickly deleting the post. ‘Scientists & Engineers’ was thereafter posted as the winner of the category.
The deleted tweet stirred an uproar from fans given the fact that it would have been Minaj’s first Grammy win.
The rapper has been nominated 12 times but has never won.
Some users took to X to slam the Grammy Awards for the error.
“Don’t let J Z distract you from the fact that you just watched Nicki Minaj have a Grammy taken from her in real time. In real time,” a user wrote.
“She was the announced winner on the website, google results and social media postings. Since when do ‘mistakes’ get announced?”
