Tobi Adegboyega, the founder of the SPAC Nation church in the United Kingdom, has claimed that Davido is a gospel artiste.

Davido is regarded as one of the most notable Afrobeats artistes of the 21st century. He has helped popularise the genre — which is secular — globally.

In a recent episode of the Off The Record podcast, the cleric was asked to speak on his decision to allow “secular artistes” to perform at his recent birthday celebration.

He argued that gospel music means “good news” and cited Davido’s 2022 single ‘Stand Strong’ as an example of a gospel song.

Adegboyega also referred to Davido and other performing artistes as his friends. He said they performed for free at the event because “they love me”.

“Gospel means good news. Everyone there is a gospel artiste. Davido is a gospel artiste. Have you heard Because I stand strong?” he said.

“What I had then was my friends. Friends who are there through thick and thin. Davido told me ‘I just want to be there and perform for one hour.’ They are my friends. I did not pay any of them. They love me, and I will give my friends platforms.”

The cleric’s comment sparked a debate among music fans, with some arguing that Davido’s music cannot be classified as gospel.

Adegboyega has been in the news recently due to a UK deportation controversy. He reportedly lost his battle against deportation from the UK over an alleged £1.87 million fraud.
