The management of Ekiti State University (EKSU) has announced the institution will resume for the 2021/2022 academic session on August 29.
Ife Oluwole, the institution’s registrar, broke the news in a statement on Thursday.
According to the registrar, the decision followed a stakeholders meeting held on August 21 to review the situation of things in the varsity.
Oluwole said during the meeting, the stakeholders lamented the “negative effects” of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the students and the institution.
The registrar added that the stakeholders also agreed that the varsity should resume academic activities in the interest of the students and the survival of the institution.
“Participants at the meeting deliberated extensively on the matter and resolved that, in the interest of the teeming population of students, their parents, and the survival of the University, it has become imperative for all members of staff currently on strike at the University to resume normal official activities,” the statement reads.
“Consequentially, the stakeholders unanimously decided that the University management should reopen the university without further delay for the continuation of academic activities.
“Accordingly, all newly-admitted students for the 2021/2022 academic session should also resume on Monday, August 29, 2022, for screening, registration, and orientation programme.”
The varsity first announced its decision to pull out of the ongoing ASUU strike in May.
ASUU has been on strike since February 14 over the federal government’s failure to meet its demands bordering on the funding of universities as well as salaries and allowances of lecturers.
Adamu Adamu, minister of education, had earlier asked the affected students to sue ASUU and demand compensation over the strike.
