Angélique Kidjo, Grammy award winner, has teamed up with Yemi Alade, Nigerian singer, for ‘Dignity’ — a song that centres on the theme of police brutality.
The 60-year-old songwriter, who took to her Twitter page on Friday to announce the release of the audio alongside the video, noted that she is delighted to “share a new song” with Yemi Alade.
The song was inspired by the 2020 #EndSARS protest against the incessant brutality of youths by the police in Nigeria.
In a statement, the Beninese singer said: “Many people think that police brutality only happens in America, but it’s everywhere.
“This song is against brutality, but it’s also about how we need to treat each other with dignity, treat nature with dignity, and treat ourselves with dignity. Because if we can’t see the dignity that Mother Nature gave to all of us, then how can we walk tall.”
The track, which was produced by Vtek da Awesom, comes after ‘Shekere’, the first collaboration between the two African singers, which appeared on Yemi Alade’s 2019 album, ‘Woman of Steel’.
