Don Jazzy, the Nigerian music producer and CEO of Mavin Records, has revealed that the collapse of the iconic Mo’Hits Records led him to consider leaving the country entirely.

Mo’Hits Records, the legendary label he co-founded with D’banj in 2006, was dissolved in 2012 due to diverging interests.

The label had been instrumental in launching the careers of stars like Wande Coal, Dr Sid, and D’Prince, making its breakup a seismic event in the Nigerian music industry.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the music executive cited the Mo’Hits split and the subsequent passing of his mother as the most challenging periods of his life and career.

He described feeling that the label’s end was a definitive setback, to the point where he nearly “packed up to move abroad”.

Don Jazzy, however, credited the encouragement of friends for convincing him to stay in Nigeria and rebuild.

This resilience, according to him, led to the creation of Mavin Records, which has since become a powerhouse in its own right.

“Honestly, not much shakes me. I’m cut from a different cloth. When something goes wrong, I ask, ‘Can we fix it?’ If yes, we fix it. If not, we move on. When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad,” he said.

“But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born. Since then, I’ve learned not to let anything break me.

“Even losing my mother two years ago was deeply painful, but life has to move on. You can’t stop. You fix what you can and keep going.”

Don Jazzy’s mother passed away in 2022 after battling cancer. However, he did not state whether the illness was the cause of her death.
