DC Comics, the US-based company specialising in comic books, has announced that Jon Kent, its latest Superman character, will be bisexual.
The company broke the news in a statement via its website on Monday, which happens to be the National Coming Out Day, an annual LGBT awareness day in the US.
The next issue of the comic book is billed to be released on November 9 and it will see Kent indulging in a same-sex relationship with Jay Nakamura, his friend.
In several images shared by DC Comics to promote the project, Kent and Nakamura were seen sharing a kiss.
The new issue of the comic book is part of ‘Superman: Son of Kal-El’, a series chronicling Kent’s journey as he takes on the mantle of Superman from his Clark Kent, his father.
Tom Taylor, writer of the comic book, said Kent’s new character was to ensure diversity of what Superman has been known for over the years.
“I’ve always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea,” he said.
“Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”
On his part, Jim Lee, DC Comics’ chief creative officer and publisher, said “We couldn’t be prouder to tell this important story from Tom Taylor and John Timms.
“We talk a lot about the power of the DC multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example.”
