Davido has shed light on his current relationship with Wizkid and Burna Boy.
The trio are considered to be the three biggest artistes in Nigeria in contemporary times.
In an interview on Breakfast Club, the ‘Assurance’ hitmaker revealed that he’s no longer close with Wizkid and Burna Boy, despite their past friendship.
The 32-year-old said the country’s music industry has evolved significantly, with new artistes like Rema and Ayra Starr making waves.
Davido said he believes the growth has led to a broader conversation, transcending individual successes.
The singer also said he is not ruling out collaboration possibilities but thinks the people around them might discourage it because of what they benefit from the tension.
“I don’t have a personal relationship with Wizkid and Burna Boy. I did at some point but I think the culture is big and the conversation is bigger than the big three right now,” he said.
“There is Rema, Ayra Starr. There are so many artistes for us to make this about us. I feel right now, the three of us understand that it is bigger than us.
“Having a collaborative single is not impossible but people around us will not want it to happen because some people make money from us not being cool.
“There have been time we were cool but that’s some years ago, now there is so much success, people between us.”
Davido described himself as “free-spirited,” while arguing that “I’m not a rebel like Burna Boy or mystical like Wizkid”.
He credited his carefree nature for his success while refusing to conform to superstar expectations.
“I’m just me. People know me as the outgoing, free guy. I’m not a rebel like Burna Boy or mystical like Wizkid, I can’t act that way,” he added.
“Some people tell me I’m too free, don’t I know I’m a superstar. I’ll be like if my dad walks pass you right now, you wouldn’t know so that’s how I grew up.
“My manager gets mad at me for wearing slippers in the house. There are people born artistes, who comes out of their room looking good.
“Some people are like that and it works for them. What works for them, works for them. Maybe if they are free like me, they wouldn’t get what they have and the way I’m us what has helped me.”
