Dana Loesch, a US political commentator, has raised dust over Chimamanda Adichie’s position on chivalry.
Loesch on Thursday suggested that Adichie, who has been vocal about feminism, “should return to her own country and worry about genital mutilation” instead of calling out sexism in Western culture.
During a Fox TV show, Loesch was asked about Adichie’s appearance on The Daily Show, where she explained the downside of chivalry.
“I think gestures like holding the door shouldn’t be gender-based,” Adichie had said.
“I’m quite happy for people to hold the door for me. But I hope they’re not doing it because of this sort of idea of chivalry.
“Because chivalry is really about the idea that women are somehow weak and need protecting. But we know that really, there are many women who are stronger than many men.”
However, Loesch, who is also the National Rifle Association (NRA) spokesperson, suggested that Adichie did not understand chivalry but should instead focus on “weightier matters” like female genital mutilation which is prevalent in Nigeria.
“I don’t think she understands quite the concept of chivalry, which was a code of conduct for gentleman,” Loesch said.
“With all due respect to Adichie — and I’m familiar with her — I think it’s a luxury of third-way feminism to complain about holding doors open for people where her country, Nigeria, it ranks top in the world for female genital mutilation, which I think if far more of a disservice to women and far more suppressive than someone courteously opening the door for someone else.”

Loesch is right. Adichie has become somewhat of a nuisance lately, buzzing around like a lost fly with her dated 1970’s feminist theories. One wonders if she has chosen this route for lack of nothing else to do with her time or she’s just attention seeking, which is what she seems to do best these days. Her brand of feminism is rather superficial and contrived and you can see that she picks straplines from old feminist books and uses them to bash people over. She should go do what she does best – write books. Her commentary is childish and tiring and she is doing genuine feminists a disfavour
I love Adichie. But to return her to her country’s problems would not solve FGM in Nigeria. It even seems as though we would rather shut down unpopular opinions and tell people there are worse problems to deal with instead.
The people of Nigeria are ever commited to ending FGM in their country; She lends her voice to female empowerment in Nigeria already.
Don’t shut her up.
Good, everyone is entitled to their opinions. Feminism has it’s facets and sections. We all choose which area to work on. Chimamanda did not wake up and say these things. Situations warrant her comments and the media loves to sell so they jump around with it. She’s not the only feminist in the US why are her comments making the news all the time? Now they’ve asked this one questions, she’s given a controversial answer so that all of us will help the media sell just like we are doing… Hahahahahahahahahah
Na Dem Sabi. To each their own.
With no due respect Loesch should tackle the devastation gun crime is causing in America in the lives of people including innocent children which is a great disservice not only to males or females but to all mankind including unborn children. She should remove the log (albeit the elephant) in her eyes before attempting woefully to remove the speck in Adichie’s eyes!
The issue of wrongful deaths resulting from the lack of gun control should be more of Loesch’s concern. Yes, FGM is a horrible thing but it does not claim lives atleast not as much as much as indescrimate use of guns do. So, seriously Loesch do the needful and tell your compatriots that you represent to control guns instead of engaging in word-war with Adiche who is uplifting people rather than supporting people the right to life. Unfortunately, right now some view gun control as an away game, until it becomes a home game.
