A magistrate court sitting in Makurdi, Benue, has ordered the remand of Austin Ife, a 20-year-old student, in a correctional centre for alleged murder and belonging to a cult group.
Ife, who lives in Gboko LGA of Benue, was charged with criminal conspiracy, membership of unlawful society to cultism and culpable homicide.
During sitting on Monday, Ada Jack, the magistrate, did not take his plea.
NAN reports that the court adjourned the matter until October 10 for further mention.
James Ewaoche, the prosecution counsel, earlier told the court that the case was received at the DZ Section, State CID, Makurdi on September 7, 2022, via a letter from the Nigerian Police ‘A’ Division, Gboko.
Ewaoche said the letter stated that on September 5, 2022, John Akpershi, the father of the deceased, reported the matter at the police station in Gboko.
He said Akpershi reported that armed men attacked and killed his son at Mimi Hotel, GRA, Gboko.
The prosecutor said six persons were then arrested and arraigned at magistrates’ court 5 in Makurdi in 2022 for committing the crime.
He said further investigation by the police led to the arrest of Ife in July and he confessed to being a member of the ‘Black Axe” confraternity.
He said the police also recovered some weapons from him.
