A serving corps member in Kaduna state has been killed by individuals believed to be phone robbers.
The victim, identified as Chalya Silas, is a graduate of Special Education from the University of Jos.
The graduate was stabbed to death on Wednesday in the Barnawa area of Kaduna.
She was said to be jogging when three people riding on a bike stopped to snatch her phone.
She was said to have resisted them but one of them stabbed her with a sharp knife and they made away with the phone.
An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kaduna state confirmed the incident but did not give details.
“Yes, it is true that a corp member was killed yesterday in Barnawa, but I will be reaching out to you in the next couple of minutes,” the source said.
“The state coordinator is on his way to the office and he will be talking to you in the next few hours.”
Also confirming the incident, Mansir Hassan, spokesperson of the Kaduna state police command, said the incident happened at about 6:45 pm.
Hassan said the deceased was wearing an earpiece on both ears as she was jogging.
“Three criminals riding on bike stopped her and wanted to snatch her phone. She resisted them and one of them stabbed her with a sharp knife,” he said.
“Immediately, the police division in Barnawa received the information, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), took her to Hermony Hospital in Barnawa where doctors confirmed her dead.”
Hassan said the Kaduna state police commissioner has directed the DPO in Barnawa and other DPOs in that area, as well as the area commander in charge, to take adequate steps to arrest the culprits.
