George Wendt, the American actor known for his role in comedy series ‘Cheers’, has died at age 76.

In a statement, Melissa Nathan, Wendt’s publicist, confirmed the film star died “peacefully in his sleep” on Tuesday.

The statement described Wendt as a “devoted family man and cherished friend” who will be “deeply missed”. His family also requested privacy at this time.

“Beloved actor and comedian, George Wendt, best known for starring in the NBC hit comedy Cheers, has passed away,” it reads.

“George’s family confirmed the news of his death early Tuesday morning, announcing he died peacefully in his sleep while at home.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him.

“He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

Some colleagues have taken to social media to pay their last respects.

Mourning Wendt via Instagram, actor Jeff Ross recalled how he made people laugh at an event despite not “feeling his best”.

“I was lucky enough to spend quality time talking with George Wendt a year ago at @bigslickkc annual event benefiting Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City,” he wrote.

“He wasn’t feeling his best, but he still rose to the occasion and made thousands of people laugh a lot for a great cause.”

Actress Melissa Joan Hart also expressed sadness over the demise of her colleague via Instagram.

“Heaven just got a little funnier with. It was a thrill to work beside him on #Sabrinathe Teenage Witch for a handful of episodes,” she wrote.

“I was a big #Cheers fan and knew I was among one of the best when he was on set. He was warm, professional and kind and our cast and crew were gifted with his presence every time. Rest in peace!”

Wendt began his career in 1974 by training in comedy at Chicago’s The Second City theater.

After his training, Wendt appeared in the 1980 film ‘My Bodyguard’, and had minor roles in the TV series ‘Taxi’,  ‘Soap’, and ‘M*A*S*H’.

From 1982 to 1993, the actor starred as Norm in all 275 episodes of ‘Cheers’, which earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

Wendt met his wife during his training at The Second City theatre and they tied the knot in 1978 and welcomed three children — Hilary, Joe, and Daniel.
