Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, has scored his first number-one spot on Billboard’s airplay chart with ‘Last Last’, his hit song.
The US music and entertainment magazine announced the singer’s feat in a publication on Thursday.
Billboard said ‘Last Last’ was the most-played song on US-monitored R&B/hip-hop stations in the week ending October 9.
“The single climbs from the runner-up spot after a 9% increase in weekly plays made it the most-played song on the U.S. monitored R&B/hip-hop stations in the week ending Oct. 9, according to Luminate,” it wrote.
“Last Last also retains its status as one of the top Afrobeats songs in the U.S., ranking at No. 2 on the latest Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart.”
This is Burna Boy’s second chart entry, having previously reached the number 26 spot with ‘Ye’ in 2019.
Burna released ‘Last Last’ through Atlantic Records on May 13 as the first song of his sixth album ‘Love, Damini’.
The official music video for ‘Last Last’, directed by Burna himself, was released alongside the song.
The song samples American singer Toni Braxton’s 2000 single ‘He Wasn’t Man Enough’.
Burna Boy co-wrote the song with producers Off & Out (brothers Mikael and Samuel Haataja), Chopstix, MdS, and Reuben.
He notably performed the song at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards two days after its release.
Burna Boy’s strides have earned him commendations from music lovers and critics alike.
“I’ve been touring since 2013 and by 2015 I had already performed in almost all 36 states of Nigeria,” the singer earlier said.
“By 2018 I had performed in almost every African country already.”
