Beyonce Knowles, American pop singer, is partially responsible for Sunderland football club’s slow start to the premier league season, David Moyes, club coach, has said.
According to Moyes, Beyonce prevented Sunderland from playing home friendlies during the pre-season, by holding a sold-out concert at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats have not won any premier league game since the season began; a repeat of the past six years.
During that time, the likes of Take That, Rihanna and One Direction – have all held summer concerts on the pitch, forcing the team to be unable to hold pre-season matches at home.
Worse still, Sunderland’s first few games of the season have been held away from home for the past 6 seasons – to allow the pitch get in good condition.
Moyes said: “I reckon if we’d had three or four of those first games at home then we’d have won at least one of them. I can’t prove that, but that’s my thought. Even having a couple of pre-season games at home would have done Sunderland no harm.
“We need to get used to having a pre-season friendly at home. I’m not saying that’s the biggest reason, but maybe it’s something that could have helped get rid of this hoodoo.
“I think the club needs to say, ‘No, we’re not doing that, we’re actually going to see if we can get the first Premier League game at home’. Then we can also play a pre-season tournament at home, get a couple of games on the pitch, give the crowd something else to see.
“Maybe that might not be the answer — but I’m trying to find one.”
Moyes, who has a full-time psychologist working on the players, further said, “there is definitely a mental fragility at times in the team. They’ve got to become mentally tougher.”
“To get that mental toughness you need a heart and spirit. I actually think there’s a bit of that in the club — but I’m trying to take it on.”
