Taraji P. Henson, American actress, has been unveiled as the official host of the 2021 BET Awards.

The 2021 nominees for the award were earlier announced to include prominent Nigerian singers like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tems.

But in a statement on Monday, BET said that Henson will host this year’s awards ceremony, while Queen Latifah, Grammy-winning American singer-actor, is expected to be honoured with its prestigious ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’.

“The 2021 BET Awards theme, ‘The year of Black Women’ is a celebration to honour trailblazing black women across the globe,” Monde Twala, SVP at BET International, said.

“Now in its twenty-first year, the BET AWARDS continues its reign as the platform to showcase black female excellence and shine a light on culture as the driving force for social change.”

On his part, Connie Orlando, EVP Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET, added: “Black women have been essential drivers of change throughout history, from the political sphere to the cultural zeitgeist.

“The BET Awards is the ultimate celebration of Black culture, and we are looking forward to spotlighting and celebrating black women during this year’s show, recognizing them for everything they’ve accomplished.”

The award ceremony will air on June 28 at 01:00 WAT (DSTV 129) while a repeat will follow at 18:00 WAT the same day.
