Khafi Kareem, former Big Brother Nigeria (BBNaija) housemate, has tackled a critic who insinuated that her baby is “ugly”.
The actress and reality TV star had recently shared a photo of herself and her baby via her Instagram page.
The post had instantly elicited different reactions, with the majority of her followers on Instagram expressing their likeness for the photo in the comment section.
But one of the users had queried why she did not reveal her child’s face.
“But why are you hiding your baby’s face? Is he ugly too?” the user, identified as Sharon, had asked.
Apparently rankled by the user’s comment, Khafi shared an artwork showing a photo of herself with the exact words of her critic.
The artwork had come amid the viral #nobodylikewomen challenge introduced by Simi, a singer, to encourage women to share their struggles.
The development, however, did not sit well with some of her followers who challenged her to provide evidence showing that Sharon indeed used the exact words as claimed.
In a follow-up post on Wednesday, Khafi shared a screenshot of her critic’s comment.
She also said the criticism from those who doubted her shows society’s deeply-rooted culture which expects women to always keep quiet in the face of challenges.
“For everyone who said I was lying or making up my previous post… Women endure many unspeakable things and most times do so in silence. When they do share they get hit with labels like ‘attention seeker, liar’ etc,” she wrote.
“We are so programmed to internalise hurt that when it is shared the hearer is more offended by the sharing than what actually happened. Regardless, I normally block and delete comments like this and keep it moving.
“But I’m guessing that is why @symplysimi started this challenge, because we shouldn’t have to. And if you feel offended by others sharing their truth, ask yourself why.”
Khafi also admonished Sharon to desist from using words that are likely to hurt people.
“For Sharron who felt the need to say this, I pray no one says such about your children, born or unborn,” she added.
“My son is beautiful just like his Daddy and I hope my husband and I are able to raise our child in a way that he is so fortified in who he is in God that mean things like this don’t affect him, but not everyone is that fortunate.
“Wouldn’t it be easier if we were just nicer to each other? Every word shapes us, so I hope you’ll pick yours better in the future.”
In August, Khafi welcomed her first child with Gedoni Ekpata, her fellow 2019 BBNaija housemate.
