Yusha’u Ahmed, the director-general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has warned corps members against embarking on unauthorised journeys.

NAN reports that the NYSC DG spoke during his maiden visit to the Kaduna orientation camp on Saturday.

Addressing the 2023 batch ‘A’ stream I corps members, Ahmed said unauthorised journeys would attract sanctions as enshrined in the scheme’s act.

He said the contents of the NYSC bye-laws would be applied to every infraction, adding that corps members must conduct themselves within the provisions of the law.

“It is a thing of pride to serve your fatherland, but don’t risk your lives via unauthorised journeys. Be disciplined and prayerful. Also, be confident of yourselves, do your work diligently and I assure you, nothing bad will happen to you,” he said.

“Avoid crime, obey the rules and regulations in the camp, and respect your leaders.”

The NYSC DG also warned the corps members against indulging in political arguments.

Ahmed charged them to rather participate as unbiased electoral officers by taking cognisance of the electoral laws during the general election.

He also warned them against posting camp activities on social media, adding that they should forward their complaints to the scheme’s management.

In his remark, Agbor Obim, the state NYSC coordinator, said a total of 1,077 corps members — comprising 407 males and 679 females — were registered in the camp.

The NYSC earlier warned corps members willing to participate in the 2023 general elections as ad-hoc staff to be “neutral and apolitical”.

In December, Christy Uba, the acting director-general (DG) of NYSC, said the scheme would not hesitate to surrender any corps member with a proven case of electoral malfeasance to the state to face the law.

“If you are to participate in the 2023 elections, please note that it is an ad hoc assignment, you must be neutral and apolitical,” Uba had said.

“Do not participate in a wrong manner, you are not a politician as corps members, you may be in the future but for now, you are corps members.”
