Bikiya Graham-Douglas, the Nigerian actress, has called on interested candidates to apply for the fifth edition of the Beeta playwright competition.

The contest is organised by the Beeta Universal Arts Foundation (BUAF), an initiative of the film star. 

In a statement sent to TheCable Lifestyle, BUAF said applications for the fifth edition of the contest titled “Our Stories Our Voices” will run from May 30 through June 30, 2022.

The foundation said applicants must be indigenous playwrights and should also be between the ages of 18 and 40.  It added that the winner would get prizes worth N1.5 million among others.

“As is the norm, ten finalists will be treated to a writing camp, from whence a winner, who stands to win prizes worth up to One Million Naira, Five hundred thousand naira and a publishing deal with PaperWorth Books Limited and their play produced by BUAF and will be part of the nationwide University Campus Outreach, will emerge at the grand finale,” it read.

According to Bikiya, the fifth edition of the contest is to promote “authentic Nigerian stories by Nigerians.”

“We remain committed to finding new voices in Nigerian Literature. Our theme this year “Our Stories our voices” aims to find authentic Nigerian stories by Nigerians,” she said.

“Now more than ever, we can see what is happening in the creative industry and how talent is putting us on the map for good. There are many talented Playwrights in Nigeria and we hope BPC continues to be the springboard for their advancement.”

Judges for this year’s edition will be led by Ahmed Yerima, the ace playwright and professor of the arts.

Members of the panel are Kenneth Uphopho, Ibiso Graham-Douglas, Ayo Jaiyesimi, and Shaibu Husseini.
