Angelina Jolie, the American actress and filmmaker, has revealed that she stopped singing because her ex-boyfriend criticised her voice.
The film star, 49, recently returned to the big screen in ‘Maria’, a new biopic about the opera singer Maria Callas.
In the biopic, the Oscar winner portrayed Callas — which means she had to sing in the film.
Speaking about her role in ‘Maria’ during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie said her ex-partner’s criticism made her believe she could not sing.
The Los Angeles-born actress said he was not “kind to me about singing” so “I adapted to his opinion” and stopped singing.
Jolie added she just discovered her voice type after coming to terms with singing again.
“…I do not sing. I had somebody in my life who was not kind to me about singing. It was a relationship I was in,” she said.
“And so I just assumed I could not really sing. I’d been to theater school, so it was weird that it even had an effect on me.
“I just kind of adapted to this person’s opinion. So it took me getting past a lot of things to start singing. And discovering also that I was a soprano.
“I thought I had a low voice my whole life. I was explaining [to the singing instructor] that my voice is deeper, and he said, “No, you’re actually a soprano.
“And probably something happened. Your voice changes when you go through different things in your life. So that was a shock. That was very strange.”
The actress, however, did not reveal the identity of the ex-partner.
Jolie was formerly married to actor Brad Pitt. They tied the knot in 2014.
After about two years of marriage, she filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
