Amber Heard, the US actress, has settled her defamation case with Johnny Depp, her ex-husband, by agreeing to pay $1 million to him.

Depp had sued Heard for defamation, accusing her of “name-calling” that often escalated into physical violence.

He said a 2018 domestic violence piece written by Heard in The Washington Post implied he was abusive.

Heard didn’t name the actor but Depp’s lawyers said her allegations made it difficult for him to land acting roles.

Depp’s suit against the actress, however, went to a trial on April 11 and ended on June 1 with the actor’s victory.

In July, the actress filed an appeal to the defamation case, asking the court to dismiss or re-try the case.

But in an Instagram post on Monday, Heard announced the settlement, adding that it is “not an act of concession”.

The actress also said she had made the choice to settle “having lost faith in the American legal system”.

“It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimized when they come forward,” she wrote.

“Now I finally have an opportunity to emancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago and on terms I can agree to. I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward.

“I make this decision having lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony served as entertainment and social media fodder.”
