Amazon Studios, the film producer-distributor subsidiary of Amazon, has announced the release date for a prequels TV series to ‘The Lord of The Rings’ (LOTR), its epic fantasy adventure film.
According to Variety, the highly-anticipated series will debut on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, 2022.
Amazon also put out the first official photo from the series, although not much is known about the project’s plot.
It is understood that the series is set in the so-called Second Age, thousands of years before the events of both ‘The Lord of the Rings’ books and ‘The Hobbit’. It follows an ensemble of both familiar and new casts of characters.
The cast includes Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, and Ema Horvath.
Others are Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Lloyd Owen, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.
The LOTR prequel series will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema, which is a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment.
On the forthcoming TV project, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, was quoted as saying: “The journey begins September 2, 2022, with the premiere of our original ‘The Lord of the Rings’ series on Prime Video.
“I can’t express enough how excited we are to take our global audience on an epic journey through middle-earth!”
