It’s award season again and the nominee list for the 2018 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) was announced in Lagos on Friday.

Although the list is dotted with Nigerian names and films, South Africa’s ‘Five Fingers For Marseilles’ was the biggest recipient, grabbing nine nominations.

Malawian film, ‘The Road To Sunshine’, took seven nominations while Frank Rajah’s ‘In My Country’ also had seven nominations.

Jade Osiberu’s ‘Isoken’ and Akin Omotoso’s ‘Hotel Called Memory’ had six nominations apiece.

‘Banana Island Ghosts’ had four nominations while ‘Hakkunde’, which stars Frank Donga and Rahama Sadau, had three nominations.

Four Nigerian films were nominated in the best film category.

‘Isoken’, ‘In My Country’, ‘Cross Roads’, and ‘Hotel Called Memory’ will be up against films from South Africa, Algeria, Ghana, and Malawi for the best film award.

Nigeria took up half of the pie for the best animation award with two out of the four films nominated. South Africa and Ghana trail behind with one nomination each.

In the same vein, three Nigerians have been nominated for best first feature film by a director. Jade Isiburu for ‘Isoken’, BB Sasore for ‘Banana Island Ghost’, and Onyeka Nwelue for ‘Ogwuetiti Obiuto’.

The category for best film by an African living abroad is solely made up of films by Nigerians.
