Rob Reiner, the ace American actor and filmmaker, and Michele Singer Reiner, his wife, were found dead in their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on Sunday afternoon.
The couple were reportedly discovered by their daughter Romy Reiner who immediately alerted the authorities.
Emergency responders were called to the property at around 3:38 p.m. local time after Romy reported a medical emergency. Firefighters and paramedics discovered the couple unresponsive inside the residence.
According to law enforcement sources, both 78-year-old Reiner and his 68-year-old wife suffered fatal wounds consistent with a knife attack.
According to TMZ, the Los Angeles police department’s robbery-homicide division has launched a formal murder investigation.
The actor’s family also confirmed their death in a statement to the media while asking for privacy to grieve their loss.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the statement read.
Rob was a legendary American filmmaker, actor and producer whose work shaped modern Hollywood. He first rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the classic sitcom ‘All in the Family’.
Renowned for blending humour, heart and social commentary, he directed enduring classics including ‘The Princess Bride’, ‘Stand by Me’, ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and ‘A Few Good Men’.
A co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment and the son of late comedy icon Carl Reiner, his influence on film and television spans decades.
