Destalker, the Nigerian comedian, has opened up about a brief chapter in his youth when he ventured in internet fraud, locally referred to as “yahoo yahoo”.

During a recent appearance on the podcast of David ‘David Syn’ Eboigbe’s podcast, the entertainer, born Oghenekowhoyan Onaibe Desmond, recalled his early struggles and desperation to find success.

Destalker revealed that he used to accompany a friend to a cybercafé with the intention of learning how to scam foreigners.

He described the intense, all-night sessions where they would pay N250 to stay online until morning. He said the environment was so demanding that the café provided water and buckets for customers to soak their feet in an attempt to stay awake.

Destalker said he however realized that the criminal path was not for him. He said while his friend was focused on “bombing” — a term for successful scams — he found himself distracted, using the time to chat with his own family and friends on Facebook.

The comedian noted that the very friend who introduced him to scamming is now a reverend, pastoring his own church.

“Even before I left Enugu, there was one of my friends, who is a pastor now. We would go to a cybercafé and would pay N250 for all night. He is not a big pastor; he is a reverend now,” he said.

“We will sit down like this. When sleep dey catch you, the cyber cafe will give you water and a bucket. You will put your leg, so that you will not sleep.

“We will go there like this. All this time, when these guys bomb, I just chat my family, my friends, my classmates, on Facebook. If I do not say you are there online, how far? That also I know, it is not my destiny.

“Before you know it, I would sleep off. There is no need for over speeding when we are in the wrong lane. At some point, his family were seeing me as a nuisance.

“But today, everybody is there. It is a changed story. Because it was not my destiny, I cannot defraud a person. I cannot defraud a person.”

The comedian emphasised that his eventual success in comedy came from embracing his own authentic path and committing to a process.

He pushed back against critics who claim he only motivates others because he is now rich, stating that he was not born into wealth.

“It is because you get money now that makes you demotivated. You get money, no! Nobody was born with the money. Whether you came from a wealthy family, the process is still there,” he added.

“Even if you are from a rich family, process is still there. So there is a process for everything. Do you understand? There are temptations also.”
