The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) has addressed allegations that singer Rema used police officers to arrest an interior designer over an unpaid debt, reframing the incident as a criminal investigation into a multi-million naira contract fraud.

The controversy erupted on social media platform X when a user Derrick accused the ‘Calm Down’ hitmaker of orchestrating the arrest and detention of interior decorator Amaka Obasi.

Derrick claimed the dispute stemmed from Obasi demanding payment for projects completed for the singer, including the renovation of his new house and the construction of a custom music studio.

According to the post, Obasi was “tricked into a meeting” at the FCID office in Alagbon, arrested, and forced to pay over one million naira for bail.

“Urgent!! We need your help!! Rema (@heisrema) is using the Nigeria Police Force to harass and detain Amaka Obasi (@amaka_babyy) all because she asked for payment on the project he commissioned her to do,” the post reads.

“Rema and Amaka had an initial contract to renovate his new house. Now it’s time to pay for the services and he has involved the police Force CID Alagbon, by tricking her to come for a meeting and arresting her over the weekend where she had to pay over 1 million naira as bail.

“Before then they have worked twice on his mother’s house in Benin and his personal house.

“He then commissioned her to build a music studio for him and an improved water system management which was not part of their initial agreement.”

Derrick alleged this was the third time Rema had used the police to harass Obasi and that the singer had involved his mother to file a “false petition” about substandard work from 2023 to avoid paying his debts.

“Throughout the course of this project he has harassed and arrested her with police 3 times and now she’s currently in detention,” the post added.

“He has now involved his mother to write a cooked up petition that the work Amaka did for her in 2023 was substandard.

“The same work that was done and completed before Rema gave her the a new contract in 2024. All this just to avoid paying the money he owes.”

Responding to the claims via her X page, Aminat Mayegun, stated the department acted on a formal petition alleging a massive breach of contract.

Mageyun revealed that the FCID received a petition alleging that Obasi (operating as Ardeb Lifestyle Company) entered into an agreement worth N386 million with Rema on April 4, 2023, but failed to deliver as agreed.

The FCID spokesperson said while an upfront payment of N287 million was allegedly made to Obasi, the petitioner claimed that upon inspection, the project was incomplete and promised furniture was missing from the property.

Mayegun added that investigations showed Obasi “diverted part of the funds to another account instead of executing the project”.

“In this matter, a written petition was submitted to the FCID. The petitioner stated that an agreement was entered on 4th April 2023 with Miss Amaka Obasi, operating under the business name Ardeb Lifestyle Company, for a project valued at ₦386,000,000. A part payment of ₦287,000,000 was made, with the balance agreed to be paid upon completion,” the post reads.

“However, upon inspection, the petitioner discovered that the project was incomplete and the furniture claimed to have been delivered was not in the building.

“The investigation further revealed that after receiving the funds, Miss Obasi failed to meet the terms of the signed agreement and instead transferred part of the money to another account.”

Mayegun said investigators also noted that the business account used was “not properly linked or registered”.

The post stated that both parties were advised to involve an independent valuer to assess the project’s status and finances.

The FCID spokesperson said Obasi “declined to provide” a valuer’s report or a legal representative, leading to her apprehension.

“Investigators also noted that the account number used by Ardeb Lifestyle Company was not properly linked or registered. Both parties were accordingly advised to engage an independent valuer to ascertain the position of funds and project execution,” the post added.

“Instead, Miss Obasi declined to provide either a valuer’s report or a legal representative, until she was eventually apprehended today.

“The public is hereby urged to be wary of individuals who circulate misleading information aimed at deceiving well-meaning Nigerians.

“It is important to reiterate that the Nigeria Police Force does not serve personal interests or vendettas, but operates strictly in accordance with the law.”

As of the time of this report, Rema has not issued a public statement addressing the allegations.
