Nintendo, a Japanese video game company, says it will announce the successor to its hit console Switch in March 2025.
In a post via X on Tuesday, Shuntaro Furukawa, the company’s president, said an announcement about the new console will be made “within this fiscal year” — which ends on March 31, 2025.
He said it would be the first new Nintendo console since the Switch was first announced in March 2015 ahead of an eventual 2017 release.
Furukawa, however, said there would be no mention of the new machine at the company’s Nintendo Direct event in June.
He said next month’s event will focus on the “Nintendo Switch software line-up for the latter half” of the year.
“We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year,” he said.
“It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015.
“We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024.
“But please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”
Nintendo also released its financial data for the past year.
While the company reported a rise in profits, it said sales of software and hardware were down.
Nintendo said the Switch had 123 million annual users despite being eight years old.
The company also disclosed that it sold 15.7 million Switch consoles between April 2023 and March 2024.
It revealed its plans to expand the use of Nintendo characters into other areas. These include the next Mario movie, a Donkey Kong Country area of its Super Nintendo World attraction at Universal Studios Japan, and a new company museum near its headquarters in Kyoto, Japan.
