Toyin Lawani, the Nigerian fashion entrepreneur, says living with a tracheostomy tube brought her closer to God.
A tracheostomy tube is a medical device inserted into the windpipe (trachea) through a surgical opening in the neck to facilitate breathing.
Lawani explained on Instagram that the experience taught her resilience and deepened her connection with God.
She said she felt the need to prioritie herself and focus on what truly matters in life.
She also expressed gratitude for the support she received on her journey to recovery.
“Living on a tracheostomy tube was not a joke, Which brought me closer to God & I learnt valuable lessons about resilience, hope, strength & power of true friendships,” she wrote.
“But through it all, one thing remains clear, taking time to focus on my health & well-being, I am reminded of the importance of self-care, self-love, & the need to prioritise what truly matters in life.
“Your support means the world to me & I am eternally grateful for each & every one of you.
“Losing my voice was a huge setback for me. Not breathing well daily, opened my eyes to a lot we also take for granted in life.’’
Lawani initially disclosed her battle with a brain cyst and degenerative spine in October 2023.
She recounted a near-death experience after her lungs collapsed during surgery.
She added that she had undergone multiple surgeries “so I can breathe well”.
Renowned for her work with numerous celebrities, Lawani has risen to become one of Nigeria’s most sought-after fashion designers.
She is also a part of the cast of ‘The Real Housewives of Lagos’.
