Helen Paul, the stand-up comedian, has recalled how her boss attempted to discourage Femi Bamisile, her husband, from marrying her.
The Nigerian comedian spoke about the challenges she faced during courtship when she was featured on the latest episode of the Honest Bunch podcast.
The 45-year-old said while she was working at Television Continental (TVC), her human resource personnel berated Bamise for choosing to marry her.
She also said another boss of hers wondered if Femi was dating her or if they were having fun.
“My boss called my husband to say ‘Femi, is it that kind of Helen you want to date? You are more than this’. And he said ‘if you want to just enjoy yourself with her it is okay,” she said.
“I took Femi to my own office then in TVC. My HR looked at Femi and said ‘look at how clean you are. A lawyer. Why the choice of Helen?'”
Paul and Bamisile tied the knot in 2010. Their marriage is blessed with children.
The entertainer recently opened up on how she overcame the societal stigma of being born out of rape.
She said she was often mocked by family members. She added that her grandmother, however, consistently urged her to stay focused on becoming someone significant in life.
Helen said due to her grandmother’s advice, she has achieved success both as “a comedian in Nigeria and as a professor in the United States”.
