Jimmy Buffett, the US singer famous for his 1970s single ‘Margaritaville’, is dead at age 76.
The Grammy nominee, who released over 30 albums, died on Friday, according to a statement on his website.
“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1 surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” the statement reads.
“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”
The cause of death remains undisclosed but reports say the singer spent time in the hospital prior to his passing.
Buffett was born in the US state of Mississippi but was raised in Alabama before moving to Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1977, Buffett made his musical breakthrough following the release of his album ‘Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes’.
‘Margaritaville’, a song off the album, stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 22 weeks.
The song was also turned into the musical ‘Escape to Margaritaville’ which made its Broadway debut in 2018.
Buffett’s other hit songs include ‘Fins’, ‘Come Monday’, ‘Son of a Sailor’, and ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’.
His music and the “beach bum” lifestyle he promoted earned him devoted fans who refer to themselves as ‘Parrotheads’.
The singer was also a best-selling author and entrepreneur who opened up a string of resorts, clubs, restaurants, merchandise shops and retirement communities based on the Margaritaville brand.
