Meghan Markle says she’s ‘43% Nigerian’

Meghan Markle the American member of the British royal family and former actress, says her mixed-race heritage includes being “43 percent Nigerian”.

The Duchess of Sussex was speaking in a new episode of Archetypes, her Spotify-exclusive podcast.

Meghan, who is the wife of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, told Ziwe, the Nigerian-American actor, that she had her genealogy done “a couple of years ago”.

Asked if she knew which tribe her ancestors were from, she said she did not but is planning to “start to dig deeper”.

In a 2015 essay, Meghan opened up about her mixed-race heritage.

She revealed that her mother is African-American and her father is Caucasian.

“Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating,” she had said.

“While my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that.

“To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”

In September 2019, Meghan also addressed her racial heritage during her tour of Africa.

In a speech she gave while visiting a charity in Zimbabwe, Meghan said: “May I just say that while I am here with my husband as a member of the royal family.

“I want you to know that, for me, I am here with you as a mother, as a wife, as a woman, as a woman of colour, and as your sister.”
