Charles Okpaleke, the chief executive officer (CEO) and co-founder of Play Networks, has come under fire over the remake of ‘Glamour Girls’, the 1994 Nollywood blockbuster.
The two-hour project, which features Nse Ikpe-Etim, Sharon Ooja, and Joselyn Dumas, premiered on Netflix on Friday.
It follows the story of four independent single women who embarked on questionable jobs within Nigeria’s traditionally patriarchal society.
But hours after the highly-anticipated movie premiered, a huge number of movie lovers took to Twitter to register their disappointments with some of its scenes.
Some Nigerians faulted the film’s storyline and overall execution while others lauded the individual brilliance of some cast members.
A huge number of users also took a swipe at Oputa, accusing him of ruining memories of Nollywood classics with remakes that fall below expectations.
“Glamour Girls, which is intended to be a remake of the 90s movie of the same title, is just high-quality footage of cringeworthy scenes, bad acting, and atrocious dialogues. The good thing about the movie is, you don’t have to go far in wasting your data before establishing this,” Gimba Kakanda wrote.
“How can I watch a movie to the end and it still doesn’t make sense? #glamourgirls,” a user wrote.
“If you watch Glamour girls with expectations, I’m sorry but it’ll be dashed, it’s not a great movie, but it’s not all that bad, it’s just an okay movie that would have been better if the producers tried a little harder. But Sharon Ooja killed her role as always,” another user wrote.
Similarly, Chukwuebuka Okoye, the TV host, wrote: “With the release of Glamour Girls, it seems that Charles of Play is slowly building a reputation for runining Nollywood classics with these remakes.”
“So none of the actors in Glamour Girls stopped during the shooting of the movie to ask “what are we doing?” This has to be the worst Nollywood movie I’ve seen in recent years,” another user also wrote.
Here’s what others had to say:
Glamour Girls, which is intended to be a remake of the 90s movie of the same title, is just high-quality footage of cringeworthy scenes, bad acting, and atrocious dialogues. The good thing about the movie is, you don’t have to go far in wasting your data before establishing this.

I feel like nollywood should start investing more in the story and the writing than making the film appear expensive.#glamourgirls

More people should watch Glamour girls on Netflix so that we can chook head together to understand how 2 flash drives magically became 3 in the last scene.

The new Glamour Girls, now showing on Netflix, is not a remake. It is an accident.

"Glamour Girls" is another Nollywood mess seasoned with lots & lots of misogyny. Remember this isn't an attack on any of the casts, so don't come here and disgrace yourself with your "Donna killed her character" or "Sharon ooja is very blah blah.!!!"
The storyline is whack asf 👎🏼— Austin Unusual (@Austin_Unusual) June 25, 2022
Glamour girls on Netflix was an epic fail, 🥹no twist,At this point it’s easy to say they weren’t scripts for these actors cos it seemed scattered 🤔.it’s like the producers sold on the name to get people to watch so they could make quick money . 🗑 pic.twitter.com/4YAYdTO8ge

There was absolutely no need for this Glamour girls movie. Charles of Play should leave old movies alone abeg and Toke’s acting? Mba plis.

Damn the glamour girls reviews are so bad, and not even in a “so bad you have to see it for yourself” kind of way.
