Aisha Lawal, the Nigerian actress, says the killing of Deborah Yakubu, a female student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, for alleged blasphemy should not be attributed to Islam.
Deborah was attacked and set ablaze by an angry mob on Thursday over remarks considered to be an insult to Prophet Mohammed.
In a post on her Instagram page, Lawal, who is popular in Yoruba movies, described the murder of Deborah as “pure wickedness”.
The film star also called on security operatives to ensure justice is served, adding that the “wicked barbaric fanatics” who committed the crime should be dealt with.
“Blame the perpetrators and not the religion. Justice must definitely prevail and the wicked barbaric fanatics must be brought to book,” she wrote.
“I honestly don’t know where it’s written in the Quran that you must kill for the prophet. Her killing was pure wickedness not in any way an act of Islam. Islam is a religion of peace and light.”
