Brother to slain OAU PG student claims family was offered N120m settlement

Gbade, elder brother to Timothy Adegoke, the late postgraduate student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), has claimed that the bereaved family was offered the sum of N120 million as a settlement after he died.

The bereaved, who is the third prosecution witness in the case, also told the court on Monday that he saw bloodstains on the wall of the room where his brother lodged at Hilton Honours Hotel, Ile-Ife when some operatives inspected it.

According to PUNCH, Gbade said he observed during the visit that the door to the room was damaged and repaired.

He was cross-examined by K. Eleja, counsel for Ramon Adedoyin, the hotel’s owner.

Gbade admitted not writing that there were bloodstains on the wall and that the door to the room was damaged in the two statements he wrote before the police.

The witness told the court he was approached by one Idmund on the telephone to accept N50 million while the wife of the deceased was offered N70 million to settle the matter.

He, however, said Adedoyin did not personally offer him money.

He also said Adesola Adedeji, the receptionist on duty the day his brother lodged in the hotel, told the investigative police officer in charge of the case that the hotel’s lodgers’ register had been doctored.

Also giving her testimony before the court, Bolatito, the wife of the deceased, broke down in tears while insisting that her husband was not sick.

On her part, Adetola Adewoyin, a relation to the late student, told the court she was contacted by the deceased’s wife to check the campus where her husband was to sit for examination when she could not reach him on the telephone.

Adepele Ojo, the judge, after listening to the testimonies of the three prosecution witnesses, adjourned the matter to March 8 for the continuation of the hearing.

The judge had earlier dismissed the bail applications of the seven defendants in the case including Adedoyin, Adedeji Adesola, Magdalene Chiefuna, Adeniyi Aderogba, Oluwale Lawrence, Oyetunde Kazeem, and Adebayo Kunle.
