The management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has postponed the reopening of hostels earlier billed for February 15 due to ongoing strike action by the non-academic unions in the university.
According to NAN, Kunle Akogun, the institution’s director of corporate affairs, broke the news in a statement on Saturday.
The varsity’s Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) had on February 8 joined the nationwide strike called by their national bodies.
Akogun said the strike had affected the sources of electricity and water supplies to the hostels.
He enjoined the students to bear with the institution’s management over the directive, explaining that the move was informed by the quest to ensure their safety.
Akogun added that a new date for reopening the hostels will be announced in due course.
The director of corporate affairs also said the directive did not affect the institution’s ongoing virtual lectures for students across all categories.
“This is to inform 100 level students of the university that the reopening of school hostels, earlier scheduled for Monday, February 15 has been postponed,” the statement read.
“A new date for the reopening of the hostels will be announced in due course.
“We appeal to our students, on whose welfare we place a very high premium, to bear with management and await further announcements.
“Please note, however, that virtual lectures will continue as scheduled for all categories of students.”
