The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has apologised to Ekiti state over delay in the release of results for its students who wrote its 2020 Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE).

Candidates who sat for the exam across the state’s public schools had complained that they couldn’t access their results — after it was released on Monday.

This had stirred panic after rumours had circulated that the development was due to the state’s indebtedness to WAEC.

On Thursday, WAEC wrote a letter to the state government in which it apologised and gave reasons for the glitch.

In the letter, which was addressed to Olabimpe Aderiye, the commissioner for education, and signed by Olajide Hakeem, WAEC’s branch controller in the state, the council stated that Ekiti wasn’t indebted to it as insinuated.

“On behalf of the Head of National Office and the entire West African Examinations Council, I hereby tender our unreserved apology for the delay that occurred over the release of Ekiti State Public School results,” the letter read.

“The council wishes to state clearly, that Ekiti state was not in any way indebted to WAEC.

“However, it should be noted that many candidates from all parts of the country were unable to access their results throughout yesterday due to the heavy traffic congestion on our site.

“The results were eventually accessed by 5.45 pm yesterday. We condemn in its entirety any attempt by anybody or group making campaign calumny to achieve any selfish desires on this very sensitive issue.

“Ekiti State government remains one of our very reliable clients and we cherish the cordial relationship existing between the state and the Council, which we intend to keep.

“We regret any inconveniences arising from the delay in the release of results of Ekiti State Public Schools.”

WAEC’s apology comes after it withheld the results of 215,149 candidates who wrote the 2020 SSCE in Nigeria.

The council had stated that the withheld results were being investigated over alleged cases of exam malpractice.
