Folarin Falana, Nigerian singer better known as Falz, has called for the immediate release of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2019 elections.
Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow and publisher of Sahara Reporters, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Peter Afunaya, DSS spokesman, who confirmed his arrest, said Sowore crossed the red-line by calling for a revolution.
He added that the ex-presidential candidate was arrested over treason charges; because he threatened the public peace and safety with his planned protest.
However, the talented singer took to his Instagram page to question the continued detention of Sowore, stating that there was no way a protest march could amount to treason.
He also described the protest march as a build up of several years of neglect of the welfare of the people.
“What we are facing is a build-up of the several years of neglect of the welfare of our people. Our government’s constant disregard for the loss of lives of many Nigerians. The ridiculous rate of poverty and unemployment that afflicts us. This is not a time to arrest anyone but to listen to the voices of the masses. Organizing a protest march does not in any way amount to treason. #FreeSowore immediately,” he wrote.
