The West Hollywood City Council has unanimously voted in favour of removing Donald Trump’s walk of fame star.
The council cited the president’s “disturbing treatment of women and other actions that do not meet the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country” as reasons behind the proposed removal.
Trump’s derisive comments about women, his policy of separating families at the border, and his denial of Russian interference in the 2016 election were also cited as reasons.
Although West Hollywood does not have any control over the Walk of Fame, the council’s resolution can urge the City Council of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove the star.
The campaign by West Hollywood has sparked angered reactions from Trump supporters and controversy in the media.
“To maintain a level sidewalk I assume all the other stars displayed will now be given the same character reviews and background checks to determine if their stars too deserve mutilation and banishment,” said Geraldo Rivera, a television personality.
The US president’s walk of fame star has been defaced several times since he was elected US president.
