With a long and rich history that dates back to the 15th century, Edo state is partly what remains of the once famous imperial Benin kingdom — one of the most powerful African empires.
Benin, the capital of Edo state, is home to the world-renowned Benin bronzes some of which are on display in museums in the UK, Lagos, and of course, Benin.
Here are five places we recommend you to visit in Edo state.
Situated in the heart of Benin City, the Oba of Benin’s Palace is one of the most popular sites in Edo state.
The palace has been in existence since 900 AD. The current structure was built in 1914, and is one-tenth of the original palace which was destroyed by British forces.
The palace interior displays local art, crafts, and historical pieces.
Creating a breathtaking scenery, the Somorika Hills are part of the rolling landscape of the Kukuruku range.
Somorika is located about five kilometers north east of Igarra and 165 kilometers from Benin City.
This is the home of brass and bronze castings in Nigeria.
Listed as a cultural heritage site by UNESCO, Igun Bronze Casters and Crafts Centre hosts the best of bronze and brass arts.
Popularly known as ‘Iya’, the Benin Moat is said to be the largest man made earthwork in the world.
The first and second moats were constructed as a defensive barrier in times of war by Oba Oguola around 1280-1295. The moat now encircles the perimeter of the city.
Located in Ovia south LGA, the park is home to a white throated monkey, a rare species in the world today.
Other animals in the park include buffaloes, chimpanzees, elephants, porcupine, monkeys, antelopes, and birds.
