The singer revealed to People that she was first diagnosed with the mental illness in 2001 but “didn’t want to believe it”.

Some of the symptoms of bipolar disorder include depression, insomnia, sudden mood swings, irritability, and hyperactivity.

Carey says she is now in therapy and getting treatment for the disorder.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she told the magazine.

“It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love – writing songs and making music.

“I’m actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good. It’s not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important,”

In 2014, Carey separated from ex-husband and rapper, Nick Cannon. Their marriage produced twins, Moroccan and Monroe.

In January 2016, she announced her engagement to Joseph Parker but nine months later, the relationship hit a snag.

Carey is currently working on her 15th studio album.
