Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean has unveiled the video for his new single ‘Fela Kuti’.
When he announced the imminent release of the song, a track off his eighth studio album, many thought it would contain some form of tribute to the Afrobeat legend.
However, the lyrics have nothing to do with the late singer, social and human rights activist, save for the part where Jean sang “Dance like Fela Kuti”.
The video, on the other hand, is heavily inspired by the classic movie ‘Coming to America’ which featured Eddie Murphy as the lead character.
Even Jean’s dance steps in the video bore little similarity to Kuti’s iconic moves.
The ‘Diallo’ singer had taken a brief hiatus from music during which he contested for the presidential seat in Haiti.
However, his bid for candidacy was rejected by Haiti’s provisional electoral council because he did not meet the constitutional residency requirement.
While it may be hard to say with certainty what inspired the title of the song, one thing is sure; it had little to do with paying respects to the Nigerian music legend.
The one person who perhaps knows how to “dance like Fela Kuti” is Diddy, the hip-hop mogul who now wishes to be addressed as ‘Love’.
The American rapper took to Instagram on Sunday to post a video commemorating his birthday and dancing excitedly to Fela’s ‘Let’s Start’.
He captioned it, “It is my birthday and I’m feeling cute”.
