Rusticated students barricade UNILAG gate, demand reinstatement

The University of Lagos was on Monday besieged by some of the rusticated students of the institution who staged a protest outside the school gate.

They protested against the management’s decision to rusticate 11 student leaders who had mobilised against poor living and learning conditions in the institution in April 2016.

Part of their agitation was the school management’s banning of the student union government (SUG) on campus.

The protest was held under the platform of Save UNILAG Coalition comprising of several activist groups and student union bodies.

The protesters, who were joined by students from other tertiary institutions, barricaded the main entrance gate leading to the institution at Akoka.

“Reinstate UNILAG 11 now”, “We deserve a better future”, said some of the banners and placards brandished by the protesters.

Toyin Adebule, UNILAG deputy registrar, information, has said that none of its students were among the protesters.

“The University of Lagos students are not protesting. The gathering outside the University gate consists of rusticated students and allies.

“They have challenged the University in court and the case has been struck out,” the statement read.
