Ex-JAMB boss: Private universities are suffering, they can’t break even

Private universities deserve to get a share of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund because they can hardly break even, says Dibu Ojerinde, former registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Ojerinde noted that the private sector is taxed for the funding of TETFund, hence, private tertiary institutions should benefit in the same manner as state and government owned universities.

The ex-JAMB boss made the comments Friday while speaking at the 11th annual lecture of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Alumni Association held at Atlantis Event Centre, Osogbo, Osun state.

“If TETFUND is responsible for funding tertiary institutions, why is there segregation against private institutions? The money accrued by TETFUND are generated from taxation levies paid by private sectors.

“Then I don’t know why private people’s money shouldn’t be used to fund private people’s university.

“The private universities are suffering because they can’t break even due to lack of enough students,” he explained.

Ojerinde who spoke on the topic, “Public University Funding in a Dwelling Economy”, called on the governments of Oyo and Osun states to resolve the issue of funding that has crippled academic activities in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.
